ABOUT THE ARTIST

Carl Winters
Lakota artist Carl Winters is a member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe in North Dakota. Mr. Winters has received numerous awards for his oil and acrylic paintings on canvas, handdrums, and buffalo, deer and elk hides. he has a commissioned mural in the Denver International Airport and has been featured on CNN's "Across America". His works appear in museums, galleries and private collections worldwide. "I strive to communicate the vitality of the Indian experience," Winters has said, "in hopes that my work will serve as a vehicle for cross-cultural understanding and respect."



Eagle Messenger
THE EAGLE MESSENGER DRUM Often considered a messenger to and from the Creator, the Eagle is a central figure in D/N/Lakota spirituality. A symbol of courage, truth and strength, the main Eagle image is adorned with symbols of lightning, rain and stars. The Eagle feathers symbolize the four directions.

Horse Coming Drum
THE HORSE COMING DRUM The design shows the coming of the horse from the European world to the Indian People. The blue wavy line is the ocean across which the horse traveled. The blue points represent a camp circle of tipis, and the hoof tracks, the horse's spread across North America. The black inner circle is the Indian world, the hoop of life.

Blessing Turtle
THE BLESSING TURTLE DRUM The turtle symbolizes protection and a long, blessed life. Wavy forked lines, inspired by beadwork and traditional painting, designate spiritual qualities. The repetitive circular compositions within the shell pertain to the hoop (symbolizing the circle of life). The central dark blue area represents water, the source of life, and the womb.

Hunting Wolf
THE HUNTING WOLF DRUM This design shows the wolf as hunter, traveler, and survivor. The tracks of the wolf in the four directions indicate his presence across the land in former times. The black part of the circular design is inspired by beadwork and quillwork motifs. The red and white feather symbols are from ancient hide paintings.

Buffalo Spirit
THE BUFFALO SPIRIT DRUM The buffalo was the main source of sustenance and an integral part of daily and ceremonial life. The four feathers and four buffaloes reflect the importance of the number four in Indian spirituality and the buffalo's former plenitude across the land. The spirit of the buffalo is represented in the center circle.
